Leo Messi is once again crowned as the best soccer player for 2021. The Argentinian beat Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Chelsea’s Jorginho to take his seventh award, cementing even further his legacy and claim for the best player ever.
Soccer is arguably the most popular sport globally, and this year, the award was anticipated with very high interest, especially as there was no trophy in 2020. A French magazine, France Football, awards the trophy, and voting comprises 176 journalists, each giving five points for the No.1.
Messi finished with 613 points, 33 ahead of Lewandowski.
Messi won his first international trophy with Argentina over the summer – Copa América, which was the deciding factor for many. Additionally, he was the top goalscorer in La Liga for the record eighth time, and he was the only bright light in a dismal Barcelona season.
The Argentinian left Barcelona to PSG over the summer in a shocking move. He has taken time to get accustomed and having his worst start to a season, but that didn’t stop voters from picking him.
France Football decided not to award a winner in 2020, and the whole world thought Robert Lewandowski was robbed, as he had a record-breaking season and won the Champions League. Even Messi, upon receiving his 2021 award, called for giving the 2020 trophy.
The Bayern Munich forward continued his form into 2021 and was the front runner for many experts. Meanwhile, the No.3, Jorginho, won the Champions League with Chelsea and Euro Cup with Italy.
Some other awards given for 2021 were:
- Ballon d’Or Feminin (best female player): Alexia Putellas
- Team of the Year: Chelsea
- Yashin Trophy (best goalkeeper): Gianluigi Donnarumma
- Kopa Trophy (best young player): Pedri
- Best Striker: Robert Lewandowski
With his 2021 award, Messi broke his own record, with seven trophies. The closest player is the five-time winner, Cristiano Ronaldo. This year, he finished sixth, which is one of his lowest rankings in a long time.
