Statistics Behind New Jersey’s Online Gambling Scene
New Jersey’s online gambling industry is constantly evolving, from the early stage and pandemic adjustments to keeping up with current gambling trends.
But as the decade-long legal market expires in November 2023, state officials saw the need for a 5-year extension for these reasons:
- Massive revenue driver
- Funds crucial programs
- Creates thousands of jobs
Let’s uncover some intriguing statistics behind New Jersey’s online gambling growth, including player’s profile, industry revenue, losses, and addiction numbers.
1. New Jersey kicked off 2023 with a 10.9% online gambling revenue improvement year-on-year.
(NJ.gov, SBC Americas)
In January, New Jersey’s online gambling revenue was $152.9 million, paying the state $45.4 million in taxes. That month, the state’s online GGR was $100+ million more than Connecticut’s January 2023 figures of $47 million.
Although the total gaming revenue for the month was behind December’s figures of $454.8 million, gambling revenue continued to increase year over year.
- January 2022: $381.7 million
- January 2023: $436 million
2. NJ casinos generated $1.80 billion in the first four months of 2023.
(NJ.gov, US News)
The first few months of the year were typically slow, but that changed in 2023. Operators generated almost half of the total gaming revenue in 2019.
Online casinos and sports betting revenue were exceptionally high during the summer, pushing the state’s total gaming revenue to over $400 million for two consecutive months.
3. At over $165 million, NJ online casinos beat its monthly revenue record in March 2023.
(NJ.gov, Play NJ, CDC Gaming Reports)
In March, New Jersey’s online gambling revenue accounted for 38% of the $487.4 million total gambling revenue.
A new market leader was also recorded during the month, replacing the normative first-place Borgata.
Rank | Operator | Total Revenue |
1 | Resorts Atlantic City | $44.9 million |
2 | Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa | $43.9 million |
3 | Golden Nugget Atlantic City | $42.7 million |

(NJ.gov, Play NJ)
New Jersey has proven time and time again how gambling has thrived in the state when it recorded an all-time high July revenue.
Of over half a billion in gross gaming revenue in July 2023, online casinos accounted for more than $155 million in revenue and $23.3 million in taxes.
5. New Jersey saw its first monthly online gambling revenue decline in April 2014.

6. Online gamblers comprised 73% of men and 27% of women.
(nj.gov)
After years of participation increase, female online gamblers declined by 4% in 2019. It was the same percentage gained by male online gamblers. The gender gap was the widest since 2015.
Although the reasons are unknown, introducing legal sports betting attracted more male players, which could extend to online casino games.

Side Note
46% of men enjoy sports betting because it involves strategies and risks, while 45.1% of women prefer casino games for entertainment.
7. NJ bettors’ average age was 37, while most players ranged from 25 to 34.

The two youngest and legal betting age groups (21-24 and 25-34) in New Jersey accounted for 51% of all online gamblers in 2019, a significant increase from about 41% in 2018.
Online players tend to be younger, as they are more web-dependent than those in older age groups.
