2016: New Jersey’s Midnight Online Gamblers

New Jersey’s online gambling revenue was low at the start of 2016, with WSOP and partypoker yearly revenue decline. The market only grew when the much-anticipated PokerStars launched in March 2016.

Online casinos earned $197 million, a 32% boost from the previous year. The DGE also noted that online gamblers peaked at midnight.

2017: New Jersey Surpasses $100 Million in Taxes

New Jersey’s online gambling revenue in 2017 reached $245.6 million, surpassing the state’s 100 million-dollar tax collection since the launch of regulated online casinos.

Online slots and table games remained the revenue engine, generating $221.35 million (⬆️ 30.1%), while poker made $24.25 million (⬇️ 8.5%).

2022: New Jersey Earns Billions in Online Gambling

The Garden State has cemented an all-time high revenue of $5.2 billion in 2022, a record last seen in 2006. It paid the state more than $526 million in taxes.

New Jersey’s online gambling revenue accounted for $1.66 billion of the GGR, mostly from online slots ($1.64 billion) and online poker ($27.4 million). Meanwhile, online sports betting dropped to over $720 million.

Statistics Behind New Jersey’s Online Gambling Scene

New Jersey’s online gambling industry is constantly evolving, from the early stage and pandemic adjustments to keeping up with current gambling trends.

But as the decade-long legal market expires in November 2023, state officials saw the need for a 5-year extension for these reasons:

Let’s uncover some intriguing statistics behind New Jersey’s online gambling growth, including player’s profile, industry revenue, losses, and addiction numbers.

1. New Jersey kicked off 2023 with a 10.9% online gambling revenue improvement year-on-year.

In January, New Jersey’s online gambling revenue was $152.9 million, paying the state $45.4 million in taxes. That month, the state’s online GGR was $100+ million more than Connecticut’s January 2023 figures of $47 million.

Although the total gaming revenue for the month was behind December’s figures of $454.8 million, gambling revenue continued to increase year over year.

2. NJ casinos generated $1.80 billion in the first four months of 2023.

The first few months of the year were typically slow, but that changed in 2023. Operators generated almost half of the total gaming revenue in 2019.

Online casinos and sports betting revenue were exceptionally high during the summer, pushing the state’s total gaming revenue to over $400 million for two consecutive months.

7. NJ bettors’ average age was 37, while most players ranged from 25 to 34.

The two youngest and legal betting age groups (21-24 and 25-34) in New Jersey accounted for 51% of all online gamblers in 2019, a significant increase from about 41% in 2018.

Online players tend to be younger, as they are more web-dependent than those in older age groups.
